I wasn't sure what to expect with this movie. I seriously did not think I would enjoy it, but I was pleasantly surprised that I really did.
I also wanted to see it because it was said that one of the scenes were shot in Norwich!! YUP..our Norwich is in this movie :) the pub The Slaughtered Prince is actually one of my favorite coffee Houses here called The Britons Arms. And the Stronghold Market was filmed on Elm Hill.
The story was simple...and was well told....and it was also surprisingly funny. About a young man looking for something that he thought would bring him love...and instead he found love itself...:)
Robert DeNiro and Michell Pfeiffer were great in their roles - both had a humorous twist to their characters.
It was at the end of the day a "feel-good" movie.
There were lines in it that were quite good...among my favorites:
Narrator: A philosopher once asked, "Are we human because we gaze at the stars, or do we gaze at them because we are human?" Pointless, really...”Do the stars gaze back?" Now *that's* a question.
"You know when I said I knew little about love? That wasn't true. I know a lot about love. I've seen it, centuries and centuries of it, and it was the only thing that made watching your world bearable. All those wars. Pain, lies, hate... It made me want to turn away and never look down again. But when I see the way that mankind loves... You could search to the furthest reaches of the universe and never find anything more beautiful. So yes, I know that love is unconditional. But I also know that it can be unpredictable, unexpected, uncontrollable, unbearable and strangely easy to mistake for loathing, and... What I'm trying to say, Tristan is... I think I love you. Is this love, Tristan? I never imagined I'd know it for myself. My heart... It feels like my chest can barely contain it. Like it's trying to escape because it doesn't belong to me any more. It belongs to you. And if you wanted it, I'd wish for nothing in exchange - no fits. No goods. No demonstrations of devotion. Nothing but knowing you loved me too. Just your heart, in exchange for mine".
it's been awhile since I've posted a movie review...and I just realized that once again I'm reviewing a Pedro Almodovar movie.
I definitely enjoyed this waaaaay better than the previous one, Bad Education.
After not having been to the movies in awhile, I decided to see this today. It had been getting good reviews, and since it was playing only at the Cinema City and not the regular box office theaters, I thought it best if I just took myself away from studying to see this.
I thought it was a good movie - far from the description by the theater that it was a "thriller", I thought Volver was more of family drama. There were quite a few funny and endearing moments between the characters which - despite it being in Spanish with English subtitles - definitely made the movie quite refreshing to see (especially in the mood that I'm in).
Penelope Cruz I thought was good - and I guess she is a "selling point" of the movie.
All in all...if you like Almodovar's movies, and have the chance to see it then by all means GO already!! :)
Almost everyone coming out of the theater after watching the movie, written and directed by the critically aclaimed director Pedro Almodóvar, had mixed feelings on their faces. "Weird", "strange" were the first words to come out of people's mouths when asked what they thought of the movie.
For me, I guess, it was not what I expected the movie to be like. Well..in truth, I didn't really know what to expect. After watching two previous movies that had Gael García Bernal (Y Tu Mama Tambien and Motorcycle Diaries) - which I both thought were really good, I thought this one would be just as good.
The plot was a bit strange and I guess just a bit on the shocking side In any case, I have very mixed feelings about the movie, and I would not push anyone into watching it. But, if you're on the curious side, then watch it. I'd be curious to know what other people thought of it.
Well..the cast alone was worth me seeing this. I had been anticipating the release of this since it was announced. It was released quite late here in the UK. Everywhere else it was in December or January. In the UK it was FEBRUARY 4th!!.
The funny thing watching the movie, was the fact that I realized really small details... like the ant that was crawling up George Clooney's collar during a scene... OK I wasn't that close to the screen...But it was just a bit weird that I noticed that. And then I noticed the small detail on Don Cheadle's necklace.
Anyway, if you like Pitt, Clooney, Damon, Roberts, Zeta-Jones, Cheadle, Mac, then watch the movie... I had fun watching it, laughed at their silliness, and the silliness of the "cameos" of the different actors. It seemed like everyone had fun making the movie, it showed. And from the interviews they've given, apparently they really did enjoy it.
I liked this better than the first one. Somehow I found it more believable because the "accidents" seemed more believable than the first, thus not as far fetched. Although some were...but still hilarious. The whole combination of stars were great I thought. De Niro - you gotta love the guy :) Stiller - as usual in his "signature" role it seems Dustin Hoffman and Barbara Streisand were brliliant... but I think the baby stole the show...
See it if you need a laugh. Although I have to warn my British friends, they might not get the humor, and find it just mediocre.
I had wanted to see this movie since it was featured in the extras and also in Time magazine... The fact that it had some big names in it also helped. But I was curious as to how it would turn out.
Well, when the power on campus had suddenly shut down on Monday afternoon, this pretty much gave me an indication that I should go and see a movie. So I called up Ria and said...Let's go see Closer..
She didn't hesitate, as a big Jude Law fan, so off we went. We had already known by that day that Clive Owen and Natalie Portman both got Golden Globes for their performances in the movie, which got us more curious. And true enough, I think they really did deserve the awards. The story line was interesting, not like any movie I had seen before. It jumped to a different time before we realized it. For those who like Jude Law, at the end of the movie you may end up disliking him...or at least really hate the character.
I would NOT recommend watching this movie with your current boyfriend/girlfriend though, as it may give them "ideas" about infidelity.
In any case, it was definitely worth watching. It was different, but good.
To cheer us up a bit after the boxing day tragedy, we went to go a see a movie. The long awaited House of Flying Daggers.... It's a bit hard to put this movie into a specific genre. The director considers it a love story packed in an action movie.
In any case, the story line was a bit weak, but if I were asked to name 5 reasons why one should see this movie then I would say: 1. Takeshi Kaneshiro 2. The Bamboo fight scene 3. The clothes - the silk brocades were divine 4. The scenery 5. Takeshi Kaneshiro (or did I mention him already?)
The action sequences weren't as convincing as Hero or Crouching Tiger - except for the Bamboo scene. For fans of this genre..if you really liked Hero or Crouching Tiger and were hoping for something similar, prepare to be slightly disappointed. For fans of Takeshi Kaneshiro...just go and see it and you'll know why... :)
For someone who has always wanted to see the play but never had the chance (or the money) - this was DEFINITELY a great alternative. I loved it!! The voices of Gerard Butler, Emmy Rossum, and Patrick Wilson were amazing!! Even Minnie Driver I thought was great in her role as Carlotta :)
My only warning is that it is a long movie ...so for those restless ones...I warn you...easy on the popcorn and drinks unless you want to go to the restroom in the middle of the movie.
For a good preview of the movie go to www.phantomthemovie.com
After awhile now I finally got the chance to go to the again... and I went to go see The Incredibles.
Now from the first time I saw the preview and read about it in TIME magazine I really wanted to see this as it was supposedly a movie that portrayed the "human side" of a superhero's life....or something like that...and coz I thought it would be a good laugh.
Well I went and saw it and loved it. The story line I admit was quite interesting...and basically I loved the fact that it portrayed the superhero as someone with flaws...
Anyway...it was a good Saturday afternoon flick to see...
ha ha ha...i actually saw this awhile ago but i just realized that I never got the chance to write a review. 3 main reasons to watch this movie: 1. Colin Firth 2. Hugh Grant 3. Colin Firth (or did I mention that already? never mind...it's worth mentioning again)
I loved the book, therefore I loved the movie... Mark Darcy is the epitome of a Mr. Right....where a girl might find such a man is beyond my present knowledge. so if anyone can shed some light into this, please do share with me...ASAP.
You can't but love Bridget, I think girls everywhere know that deep down inside they have a "Bridget" in them. For me, I don't think I have to go too deep to find the "Bridget" in me. Perhaps my version of the "diary" is this multiply... perhaps... (i've been using that word a lot today it seems) - don't mind me though..
anyway...like i said...see the movie (or not) if you haven't for you gals out there: have fun for you guys out there: try to derive lessons from the movie...don't think of going to see it as going to see a chick flick...see it as an educational experience :)
Well, it was a typical "film silat" - martial arts movie. Lots of action and lots of effects of people flying and walking on water stuff.
But not to demean the film, it had a very important moral and message. If you haven't seen the movie and would like to...then don't read the rest of this...
The movie was good in a way that it did keep you on the edge of your seats wanting to see what actually happened. Did he? Didn't he...? Did he succumb to the temptation of revenge? Does he succeed in his mission? OK, I won't give it away.
But it was a very interesting movie. The scenery was beautiful, quite breathtaking actually.
I loved this! I thought it was funny. There were a lot of quips and lines that were hilariously funny. One can kind of imagine the actual actors behind the animation.
You just gotta love Lenny...and the two jellyfish Ernie and Bernie...
However, I kinda wished it was more about Lenny than about Oscar.
For those young at hear and looking for a laugh go see it. A lot of the jokes are very "American" humor..so to my English friends you may want to skip watching it if you're not into it. I have to admit I was the only one laughing in the theater at some points. Either I have a wacky sense of humor or they just didn't get it... I'd like think the latter was true :)
Ok...I didn't know how to rate this really. As I have to admit it was entertaining. But it's not what I call an Oscar winning movie. If you like Bollywood movies you would like this movie. it's Bollywood in English I guess. I was a bit surprised and found the singing a bit corny but hey...like I said it was very Bollywood. It had all the elements of a Bollywood flick. The rain, the field, running through fountains, singing, dancing, and forbidden love. you do learn about culture though :)
If you're not into Bollywood movies, then don't go out of your way to see it. But if you're up for a laugh then by all means go and see it.
